Job Posting – Lead Artist

Who we are:

SomaSim is an independent game development studio in Chicago that focuses on making simulation and strategy games. The studio has released three games with numerous expansions and content updates since it was founded way back in 2013.

What we’re looking for:

We’re seeking a Lead Artist to join our team that’s strong in character and environment art in 2D and 3D, but can also handle anything visual that our studio may need. The Lead Artist would also manage other artists and work together with the design and development teams.

We’d like our Lead Artist to:

  • Create art for the studio’s game projects including 2D illustrations, 3D models, UI art, and marketing assets.
  • Create compelling concept art for pitching to external partners/publishers.
  • Maintain visual and artistic style guidelines.
  • Manage external art contractors’ workflows and production schedules.
  • Review work from external partners and provide feedback.
  • Work with the development team to create tools and workflows.
  • Engage in the studio’s ongoing game design processes.
  • Participate in project planning and scheduling.

Our Lead Artist’s qualifications:

  • Have several years of experience creating art for video games. Recent grads with similar in-school experience are welcome to apply.
  • Be fluent in industry-standard software like the Adobe Creative Suite and Blender/Maya among others.
  • Have strong illustration and 3D modeling skills and an excellent eye for color and composition. See below for some images from the studio’s current project.
  • Lead the team from mood boards all the way through concepting to the final shippable assets.
  • Love making games and have a drive to build and create new experiences for our players.
  • Enjoy working with a small, flexible team.
  • Be able to create project schedules that meet both short-term goals and long-range deadlines.
  • Have great organization and time management skills. We’ve usually got a few plates spinning at the same time.
  • Be available to work on-site in Chicago – purely remote work is not an option for this position.

These would be nice to have but not required:

  • Some familiarity with the Unity game engine.
  • Ability to oversee video production and editing.
  • Experience with 2D or 3D animation.
  • Editing/creating scripts and tools in Unity and Maya/Blender/Photoshop etc..

If you become our Lead Artist, you would:

  • Work on a contract-to-hire basis. We’d ask you to start on a contract while we’re pitching, then move to a full-time, salaried position.
  • Receive compensation (contract rate and then salary) that’s competitive with other small, independent studios.
  • Get health benefits and generous time off once you’ve gone from contract to salary.
  • Work on-site with us in Chicago. We’re close to the L and several bus lines in a space that houses other independent game teams and other local creatives. We’ve got a completely casual dress code and work style.

If you want to apply:

  • Submit a resume.
  • Show us your portfolio, reel, game demo or anything else that you’ve got online that you think shows off your qualifications.
  • Write us a nice cover letter. We want to hear why you’d like to be our new Lead Artist.

You might be thinking…

I’m a recent grad or about to be. Should I apply?
Please do! We’d be happy to help you grow into the role.

And if I’ve got a ton of experience?
We’d love to talk to you as well. Our independent studio may have small studio budgets, but we’ve got big studio game ideas and we may be able to adjust our pitching to accommodate.

Do I need to be legally eligible to work in the US to apply?
                Yes, you do.

Email resumes, cover letters and links to matt@somasim.com.
