Software Engineer

SomaSim is seeking a lead software engineer to join our game development team in Chicago. SomaSim is currently developing Rise of Industry 2 for release in 2025 and the software engineer will be an integral member our development team.

Our ideal candidate displays a deep knowledge of game design and software architecture and will be able to work with the art and design teams to realize their visual and systemic concepts for the game. Additionally, the Software Engineer is expected to contribute their own ideas to the game in the course of development.

The Software Engineer will be expected to take a lead role in the design, construction and maintenance of all code deemed necessary for the completion of the project. They will be expected to maintain the development calendars and task flow for the engineering team. They will represent the needs of the engineering team during studio leads meetings and in discussions with external partners.

They will be responsible for development across all relevant platforms including but not limited to PCs and third party game consoles. In the course of developing for these platforms, they may need to manage and engage with external contractors engaged by the studio.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must to successfully lead the technical development within our small indie studio.

The following key requirements are necessary for a candidate to be considered for this position:

  • Degree in computer science or related field from an accredited university
  • Significant games industry experience (3+ years)
  • Fluency with C# and the Unity engine (3+ years)
  • Previous management of large projects and source control
  • Experience in UI/UX design
  • Demonstrated game design experience with a portfolio of professional or student project\s
  • Excellent writing and communication skills with a strong preference for those with additional degrees or accreditations in writing or English
  • Fluency in a language other than English
  • Ability to work on-site at the studio in Chicago

In addition to those requirements, the following would be beneficial for candidates seeking this position

  • Previous experience with simulation/strategy games
  • Work on a previously shipped commercial game (stand alone title or DLC/expanded content)
  • Demonstrated management of external partners and contractors
  • Knowledge of creating project plans and design documents
